If your home is targeted by burglars
If you suspect someone is inside your house, don't go inside, go to your neighbour's house and call the police.
If you see an intruder leaving your home, make a note of their physical appearance, what sort of vehicle they're driving, including the number plate. Those details will be important when you report the burglary.
If the burglar has gone, don't touch anything – police may be able to gather evidence including any DNA or fingerprint samples. New police technology is catching more criminals, faster.
Report stolen credit cards and cheques to your bank as soon as possible.
Check with your neighbours to see if they noticed anything suspicious.
Contact your insurance company, which will ask for your incident report number. An assessor may want to visit and will want full details of what's been taken.
Ruin a burglar's day – secure your home
Reducing burglary is a major priority for the community – and the State Government. Tough police action, such as the targeting of repeat offenders and use of the latest DNA and fingerprinting technology are helping to reduce burglaries across the State.
You can play your part too, by improving your home security and working with your neighbours and the police to help keep burglars off our streets.
Secure your home and improve the safety of your local neighbourhood by:
- Locking up – in half of WA's burglary cases, the burglars have climbed through an open window or walked through an unlocked door!
- Make it look like you're at home – don't broadcast your plans to leave the house.
- Don't let burglars use your spare key – never leave a spare key outside your house. Leave a spare with a trusted friend or neighbour.
- Mark your property - Engraving / marking your driver's licence number onto your property makes it easier for you to identify and recover your property. It also makes it much harder for burglars to resell stolen goods.
- List and insure your property - Record serial numbers and photographs of your jewellery and other valuable items. You should make sure you have current and adequate insurance cover.
- Trimming or clearing trees or shrubs which may prevent a clear view to your house.
- Installing quality security lighting and burglar alarms – burglars don't want to be caught in the act, so install a motion-activated light to deter them.
- Having quality deadlocks on all your external doors and using key locks on your windows.
- Installing security screens so you can have your windows open without inviting burglars in.
- Lock up your shed, garage and letterbox – Don't let a burglar steal your tools or use them to break into your house. Always put your tools away and lock your shed and garage. Make sure your letterbox is locked to prevent mail from being stolen.
- Call your local police station to join Neighbourhood Watch – get your neighbours involved and help the police catch burglars!
